A
- Auth code
- A password for moving a domain to another provider (also called transfer code or EPP code). Your current provider issues it; for domains with us you retrieve it in the customer center under “Domains”. See Moving a domain.More in our guide: Domain umziehen: AuthCode, Kosten und Dauer
B
- Backup
- A backup copy of your data. We back up automatically every day, so versions can be restored if the worst happens.More in our guide: Backup wiederherstellen – ohne Panik und ohne Datenverlust
- Brotli
- A modern compression method that delivers web pages smaller and therefore faster to load.
C
- Cloud-Server
- A virtual root server with its own firmly allocated NVMe storage – CPU and RAM either fairly shared (shared) or guaranteed (dedicated), depending on the type. See Cloud Server.More in our guide: Cloud-Server anlegen – Schritt für Schritt
- CMS
- Content management system – software for maintaining website content without programming, e.g. WordPress, TYPO3 or Joomla.
- Cronjob
- A scheduled, automated task on the server, for example for regular backups or imports.
D
- DNS
- Domain Name System – the “phone book” of the internet. It translates domain names like ihre-firma.de into the server address (IP) that computers need. You remember the name, and the DNS finds the right server in the background. Because of caching (see TTL), changes take some time to arrive everywhere.More in our guide: DNS-Einträge erklärt: A, AAAA, CNAME, MX und TXT
- Domain
- The address of your website, e.g. ihre-firma.de. See Domains.
- DSGVO
- The EU General Data Protection Regulation governs how personal data may be processed – such as names or email addresses from a contact form. For websites this means, among other things, encrypted transmission and transparent privacy notices. Servers in Germany and a data processing agreement (DPA) help you comply with it.More in our guide: Cookie-Banner, Schriften, Karten: Was die Technik zum Datenschutz Ihrer Website beiträgt
E
- ECC-RAM
- Memory with error correction – it detects and fixes memory errors, which is important for stable servers.
F
- FTP / SFTP
- Protocols for transferring files to the server. Plain FTP is unencrypted; with us you transfer encrypted via SFTP (with your web hosting login) or FTPS (FTP over TLS) – see the FTP guide.
H
- Hosting panel
- The German-language management panel for domains, mailboxes, databases and PHP versions.
- HTTP/2 & HTTP/3
- Modern web protocols that deliver content in parallel and with low latency – noticeably faster pages.
I
- IMAP / SMTP
- The two protocols behind your email: IMAP retrieves messages and keeps them in sync on the server, so you see the same state on your PC and your phone. SMTP is responsible for sending. See email hosting and the email guide.
- IOPS
- Input and output operations per second – a measure of storage speed. NVMe SSDs reach very high values.
K
- KVM
- A virtualization technology that creates real, isolated servers. The basis of our Cloud Servers.
L
- Let’s Encrypt
- A free certificate authority for SSL certificates. Included in every hosting plan – see the SSL guide.More in our guide: SSL-Zertifikat einrichten: HTTPS für Ihre Website
N
- Nameserver
- Servers that answer DNS queries for a domain and determine where it points.More in our guide: DNS-Einträge erklärt: A, AAAA, CNAME, MX und TXT
- NVMe
- The fastest SSD technology with a direct connection – significantly higher IOPS and shorter load times than classic SSDs.
O
- Object storage (S3)
- Storage for files that is accessed through the S3 interface rather than as a drive – suited for backups and large amounts of data that many programs can write to directly. See object storage.
P
- PHP
- The most widely used programming language for dynamic websites. We offer current versions, selectable per domain.
S
- Snapshot
- A saved state of a cloud server’s disk that you can return to with one click – for example before an update. A snapshot lives on the same storage as the server and therefore does not replace an off-site backup.More in our guide: Backup wiederherstellen – ohne Panik und ohne Datenverlust
- SPF, DKIM, DMARC
- Three DNS records that let receiving servers check whether an email really comes from your domain: SPF lists the permitted servers, DKIM signs each message, DMARC defines what happens to forgeries. Without them, mail is more likely to end up in spam. You can check them with the mail check.More in our guide: SPF, DKIM und DMARC einfach erklärt – damit Ihre Mails nicht im Spam landen
- SSD
- Storage with no moving parts – faster and more reliable than classic hard disks (HDD).
- SSH
- Encrypted command-line access to the server – as root on cloud servers, and included for your own account with web hosting.
- SSL / TLS
- Technology for encrypting the connection between browser and server – recognizable by the “https” and the padlock. This means third parties cannot read data sent along (e.g. from forms). A certificate is included in every hosting plan – see the SSL guide.More in our guide: SSL-Zertifikat einrichten: HTTPS für Ihre Website
- Subdomain
- A prefix in front of the domain, e.g. shop.ihre-firma.de – can be created free of charge in any number.
T
- Tier-3
- Classification for data centres with redundant power and cooling supply. See data centre.
- Traffic
- The data volume transferred by your website. With our web hosting it is not limited by volume.
- TTL
- “Time to live” – how long a DNS record is cached before it is queried again.More in our guide: DNS-Einträge erklärt: A, AAAA, CNAME, MX und TXT
U
- Uptime
- The availability of a service, usually as a percentage per year. We commit to 99.9% per calendar month – if we fall short, you receive a credit (terms § 5 (7)).
V
- vCPU / vCore
- A virtual CPU core of a cloud server. Guaranteed and never overbooked with dedicated types, shared fairly with other servers with shared types.
- VPN / WireGuard
- A VPN connects devices over the internet in encrypted form, as if they were on the same network. WireGuard is a lean, modern VPN protocol on which our business VPN is based.
W
- Webspace
- The storage space for your website files, databases and emails on our server.More in our guide: Cloud-Server oder Webhosting – was brauche ich wirklich?
- Wildcard-Zertifikat
- An SSL certificate that secures a domain including all its subdomains (*.ihre-firma.de).
