Set up FTP access.
How to transfer files encrypted via SFTP or FTPS to your web space – using the free FileZilla program as an example.
SFTP or FTPS – never plain FTP
We offer two encrypted ways: SFTP (over SSH, port 22) with your web hosting login and FTPS (explicit FTP over TLS, port 21) for the FTP accounts you create in the customer center. You should not use plain, unencrypted FTP.
FileZilla is available for free on Windows, macOS and Linux. Only download it from the official site filezilla-project.org to avoid bundled software.
Have your credentials ready
For SFTP you will find the server, port and user in the customer center under Webspace → Files & SSH; the password is your web hosting password. For FTPS create a separate FTP account under Webspace → FTP – optionally restricted to a start directory.
Open FileZilla
Start FileZilla and open the Site Manager (File → Site Manager → New Site).
Enter the connection details
Enter the following:
- Server: the server from the customer center (Webspace → Files & SSH or FTP)
- Protocol: SFTP – SSH File Transfer Protocol (port 22) or FTP with encryption Require explicit FTP over TLS (port 21)
- User & password: your web hosting login for SFTP, the FTP account you created for FTPS
Connect
Click “Connect”. On the left you see your local files, on the right the web space. Confirm a certificate prompt once.
Upload to the right directory
Upload your website files into the www directory (depending on your access it appears in the FTP client as / or /www). Next to it is a files folder for private data – the website does not belong there.
Common questions & troubleshooting.
The connection is refused.
Where do my files belong?
www directory of your domain. Files placed directly in it are then reachable under your domain. Can I also upload without FileZilla?
Is plain FTP insecure?
