Device backup · PC, Mac, server, NAS

Your office data backed up, encrypted and in Germany.

Every device backs up every day into its own separate storage area with us. Encryption happens on your device – we only see THAT a backup arrived, never WHAT it contains. And if a device stops backing up, you will hear it from us.

01 What for

For the devices that hold your work.

Office PCs and laptops

The user folders of every workstation, every day, without anyone having to think about a hard drive. On Windows including open files (shadow copy).

Macs

The home folder, daily at lunchtime – when the Mac is actually switched on. Caches and the bin are left out.

Servers

Configuration, user data and web directories of a Linux server, every evening with low priority.

NAS

Synology Hyper Backup and QNAP Hybrid Backup Sync back up to us via S3 – the off-site second copy that survives water damage or a burglary.

Against ransomware

Older versions are kept: 7 daily, 4 weekly and 6 monthly. A version from before the infection can be restored.

Proof instead of claims

We check the storage for when the last backup arrived – not a message from the device. Your customer center shows “last backup X hours ago”.

02 An example

One office, four devices.

A made-up but typical example: a small tax office with three desktop PCs and a laptop for client appointments.

  1. Starting pointSo far, backups go to a USB drive now and then – when someone remembers. Nobody knows for sure whether the last one was complete.
  2. Add the devicesIn the customer center, one device is added per computer. The ready-made commands are pasted as administrator, and the encryption password goes into the office safe as a printout.
  3. Backed up every dayFrom now on all four devices back up daily into their own area. The customer center shows for each device when the last backup arrived.
  4. An alertAfter being set up again, the laptop no longer backs up. After 48 hours an email arrives – the office fixes it before anything is lost.
  5. When it mattersA desktop PC is hit by ransomware. Yesterday’s state is restored with restic; the other devices have their own areas and remain untouched.
03 Plans

One plan for the whole office.

Both plans back up the same way – they differ in the number of devices and the storage.

05 Compared

Why a hard drive is not enough.

A rough guide – in each case a lot depends on how things are set up.

ProMedia24 device backupUSB hard driveSynchronising cloud folder
Runs without anyone doing anything Yes, daily on a schedule Only when someone plugs it in Yes, continuously
Older versions 7 daily, 4 weekly, 6 monthly Depends on the program Depends on the provider, often limited in time
Ransomware An older version can be restored Only if the drive was not connected during the infection Encrypted files are synced too; recovery depends on the version history
Off site Yes Usually not Yes
Who can read the data Only you, with your password Anyone who has the drive – unless it is encrypted As a rule, the provider manages the keys
Alert when nothing is backed up any more Email after an adjustable period No Depends on the provider
06 How it works

Three steps to your first backup.

Order a plan

Once your payment has arrived, device backup is ready in your customer center.

Add a device

Enter the device name and type – you get ready-to-paste commands including a schedule. The encryption password is created on your device in the process.

Done

The first backup starts right away, then daily. Your customer center shows when the last one arrived for each device.

08 Frequently asked questions

Good to know.

Can you read my data?
No. Backups are made with restic, and restic encrypts on your device before anything leaves it. The password is created on your device during setup and never reaches us. We only hold a read-only key that shows us WHEN a backup arrived – nothing is readable for us. On a NAS, switch on client-side encryption in Hyper Backup for the same effect.
What happens if I lose the password?
Then the backup can no longer be opened – not by us either. That is the price of nobody but you being able to read it. So keep the password safe during setup, for example in a password manager or printed in a safe.
How do I get my data back?
With restic on the device itself or on a new one: single files, whole folders or the state of a particular day. If you like, we help as part of our IT service.
How do I notice that something is wrong?
Every hour we check the storage for when a device’s last backup arrived. If it is older than 48 hours (adjustable per device), you get an email – once per outage, not every hour.
Does this protect against ransomware?
Older versions are kept, and a version from before the infection can be restored. To be honest: a device that has been completely taken over can also delete its own backup with its own key. That is why every device has its own storage area – the other devices remain untouched – and why we tell you when a device stops backing up.
Where is the data stored?
On our object storage in a data centre in Germany. Downloads cost nothing extra, there are no traffic charges.
Which folders are backed up?
On Windows the folder C:\Users with all user folders, on a Mac the home folder without caches and trash, on Linux /etc, /home, /root, /srv, /var/www and /opt. The commands are in plain sight – if you want to back up more or less, adjust the list.
What if a computer is switched off at backup time?
Windows PCs and Linux servers catch up on a missed run as soon as they are running again. A Mac that is switched off backs up at the next scheduled time. If a device stays off longer than you have set, you get an email.
What happens when the plan’s storage is full?
Then the storage accepts no new data and the device’s backup fails – nothing is deleted. Because no new backup arrives after that, you find out at the latest from the email once the set period has passed. You see the fill level in the customer center.
Questions?

We can set it up with you.

You would rather not set up the backup yourself, or you have an unusual device? We look at it with you – personally and without a queue.
