Object storage · S3-compatible

Storage for everything that must not get lost.

S3-compatible object storage from Germany – for backups, archives, media and applications. Every program that speaks S3 works right away, and you only pay for the storage.

01 What for

One storage, many tasks.

Off-site backups

The office NAS, the server, the laptops: backup programs with S3 support back up directly here – separate from the place where the originals live.

Archive

Finished projects, old bookkeeping, raw data: what is rarely needed but must be kept lives here more cheaply than on expensive working storage.

Media for websites

Move images, videos and downloads out of the web space. Many plugins and applications can use S3 as storage and fetch the files with their own key.

Nextcloud and applications

Nextcloud, shop systems and your own programs mount S3 as external storage and grow without the server having to get bigger.

Separate access per program

A key of its own for every program – read-only or read-write, for all buckets or only selected ones. Revoke a key with one click.

Data in Germany

Your data sits on a storage server we run ourselves, in a data center in Germany. No detour via US providers.

02 An example

The second copy off site.

A made-up but typical example: a small architecture office whose plans and project folders sit on a NAS in the office – one copy, in one place.

  1. Starting pointEverything is on the NAS in the meeting room. Water damage or a burglary would hit originals and backup at the same time.
  2. Create a bucket and a keyAfter ordering, the office creates a bucket for the NAS in the customer center, plus a key that may only write to this bucket.
  3. Connect the NASIn the NAS backup software, an S3 target is set up with our address, path-style addressing and encryption on the NAS. From then on the backup runs every night.
  4. Access for the IT providerFor checks, the external IT provider gets a second key that may only read. It cannot change or delete anything with it.
  5. When it mattersAfter the NAS fails, the office sets up a new device and restores the latest state from the object storage.

06 How it works

Connected in three steps.

Order a plan

Once paid, your storage is set up automatically.

Create a bucket and a key

In the customer center under Object storage. You see the secret key exactly once – we do not store it.

Connect your program

Enter address, region and key, set path-style addressing. Examples for rclone and the AWS command line are right next to it.

08 Frequently asked

Good to know.

How is this different from web space or cloud storage like Dropbox?
Web space is meant for websites, Dropbox for people who drop files with a click. Object storage is meant for PROGRAMS: backup software, applications and scripts store files there via the S3 interface. In return it is cheap and simply grows with a larger plan.
Which programs work with it?
Anything that supports “S3-compatible” storage – for example rclone, restic, Duplicati, the AWS command line, many NAS systems and Nextcloud. The important setting is path-style addressing.
What happens when the storage is full?
Further uploads are rejected, nothing is deleted. We measure the fill level every ten minutes and show it in the customer center. If you spread your data across several buckets, the limit can be exceeded briefly until the next measurement – after that nothing grows any further. For more space, choose a larger plan or get in touch.
Does downloading cost extra?
No. You pay the monthly plan price, we do not charge traffic on top.
How secure is my data?
The connection is encrypted, every access needs its own key, and other customers cannot see your buckets. For especially sensitive data we additionally recommend encrypting when backing up – restic and most backup programs do that by themselves.
Can I share files publicly?
The customer center does not offer public buckets: every access needs an access key. If a website is to deliver files from here, your application fetches them with its own key.
Are older versions of a file kept?
No, we do not switch on versioning for buckets – an overwritten file is replaced. If you need older versions, back up with a program such as restic or Hyper Backup that keeps versions itself.
What happens if an invoice remains unpaid?
If the contract is suspended, your access keys stop working for the time being. We do not touch the data itself; once payment arrives, the keys work again.
What happens to my data after cancellation?
When the contract ends, your access keys are deleted, the stored data expires within a day and the empty buckets are removed afterwards. Retrieve anything you want to keep beforehand.
